The Big Book of the Blue (The Big Book Series)
After The Big Book of Bugs and The Big Book of Beasts, the hugely successful series
Following the wild success of The Big Book of Bugs and The Big Book of Beasts, The Big Book of the Blue is the third installment in Yuval Zommer’s beloved series. Alongside everything the young oceanographer needs to know, Zommer’s charming illustrations bring to life some of the slipperiest, scaliest, strangest, and most monstrous underwater animals.
The book opens by explaining how different types of animals are able to breathe and survive underwater, and the different families to which they belong. Subsequent pages are dedicated to specific creatures, including sea turtles, whales, sharks, stingrays, and seahorses, and show varied life in specific habitats, such as a coral reef or deep sea bed. The Big Book of the Blue also explores the underwater world thematically, looking at animals in danger, learning how to spot creatures at the beach, and discovering how to do our part to save sea life. Beautiful and filled with fascinating facts, young, curious readers won’t be able to tear their eyes away from the page.

Ok
My son loves the ocean and has a lot of ocean books and this one is probably my least favorite. The information is fine, and my son does enjoy looking at it, but the art is weird. When I saw it online I thought it looked fun, but it seems confusing for an informational book. For instance, on the crab page it talks about decorator crabs, but they look pretty much the same as the others. And some of the fish are just unrecognizable. What probably bothered me the most about the illustrations was the page on rays. The book distinguishes between manta rays and sting rays but they all look the same, and they all have the flaps only manta rays have. Most people seem totally satisfied, I’m sure if I didn’t have a little marine biologist I wouldn’t be so particular, but again, for an educational book it’s just not my favorite. And if you don’t care about having an educational book I’m sure you could find something more fun.
"Flipping awesome" fish and more; it's marine life on the fun side
This is a zany book for parents who want to interact with their kids in a fun way. I think you will be oohing and aahing along with them; I’m pretty sure you’ll find out some new, interesting facts, too. And teachers, this is a treasure. Not only does the wonderful artwork pull you into a whole new world with each page, but you are asked questions like, “Does a seal live in the sea or on land?”, and “how do fish move?”. The answers are fascinating. Plus, author Zommer likes to play with words. The whale is “in for the krill”. Kids who are developing their reading skills will find it helpful that each 2-page category tends to have a lot of repetition, like the pages that cover seahorses, and the ones that cover snakes that live underwater, and flying fish. Kids who live near a body of water will recognize some facts and learn about others. Kids who don’t live near the water will recognize facts they’ve learned on TV and enjoy learning new ones. Yuval Zommer may have a master’s degree in illustration, but he thinks like a kid and has the same creative ideas. And for this book he consulted Dr. Barbara Taylor, a NOAH scientist. So, the facts are verified.
It's definitely big, with good info
Bought for a 3 year old who is passionate about sea life. Very cool info, so much to learn. The only thing is that the art style kind of puts me off, with all the fish having 2 squint eyes on one side of their heads like Picasso of the sea. However, this book is requested a lot for reading time, so the kid likes it. I kind of want to get the bug one, but I am apprehensive about more bugs with 2 eyes on one side of their heads.
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE!! — I was so pleased when I got it!
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE!! The size is amazing, I was so pleased when I got it! I accidentally put two (2) of the same book in my cart not paying attention, I should have put 10 because EVERYONE LOVES this book, it’s amazing book, I got one of each! The art is so refreshing! This holiday they will be loved!
Great Reference Book for Kids!
I had been seeing this book all over social media in homeschooling circles and I bought it on a whim. I was a little hesitant because I'm admittedly a bit cheap and I didn't want to spend this much on a book. But, I'm glad I did! It's huge in size, the illustrations are beautiful and it's full of wonderful information about marine life. My kids and I have been really enjoying it during our ocean theme homeschool unit!
Favorite
I love this book!!! I’m actually terrified of ocean animals, so I love this book because I can read it and share it with my kids because the pictures are so fun! Each page is colorful and engaging, with just enough information to start conversations with your kids but also learn something. I have the Bug book as well, I will probably be adding the others soon too!
Absolutely amazing
This book is just perfect: it's beautifully and colorfully illustrated, it contains useful and well structured information about sea creatures without an overload of numbers and scientific facts. Love it.
Love this set of books!
I first bought the Big Book of Bugs for my nephew. He loved it and quotes facts from it all the time. So I followed it up with this. I work in Early education and bought another set for the center I work at. All the teachers I work with really enjoyed the facts and illustrations in this book. It’s a great resource to have. I plan to buy them all.
I really like this book
I bought his for my son's 4th birthday and I've read this book to him several times since then. I really enjoy this book and actually learned a couple things I didnt know. I also really like the artwork.
A whale of a tail ;)
We got this whole collection for homeschooling. The artwork is great. So much to look at on every page. It is a very tall book. It is so nicely made it could easily be a display piece. It will be great for our little one.
